Welcome to NonProfits Plus! Consultants for institutions moving towards museum accreditation. NonProfits Plus works with museums to develop, support and strengthen their institution in pursuit of accreditation with the American Association of Museums (AAM). For almost 35 years AAM accreditation has served as the field’s primary vehicle for quality assurance, self-regulation, and public accountability. Developed and sustained by museum professionals, the program reflects, reinforces and promotes best practices and the highest standards for museum operations. What is a Museum?In the last 30 years, museums have become much broader in the scope of their collections and interpretation. The common denominator for museums is that these institutions make a “unique contribution to the public by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the things of this world. There are 15,500-16,000 museums in the United States. This figure is based on two surveys – one done by the National Conference of State Museum Associations in 1998, and the other conducted by the Institute of Museum of Library Services in 2003. As of January 2005, 756 institutions in the United States have been accredited by the AAM. 40% of accredited museums have budgets of less than $1,000,000. and less than 15 employed staff.
